Intumescent Coating Services - Passive Fire Protection Solutions

Intumescent coatings are thin-film fire protection systems that expand (intumesce) under heat, forming a stable char layer that insulates the substrate. Applied at project-specific dry film thicknesses (DFT), they deliver 30–120 minutes of cellulosic fire resistance to structural steel and selected timber elements.

Typical ratings delivered: 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes for cellulosic fire exposure. Required DFT is determined by member size and exposure (section factor Hp/A) per tested tables in manufacturer datasheets referenced to BS 476 / EN 13381 assessments. We produce project-specific DFT schedules to match your structural design and programme constraints.

  1. Survey & Take-Off: Review drawings, fire strategy and member schedule; confirm substrates and primers.
  2. Engineering & DFT Schedule: Calculate section factors (Hp/A) and produce coating thickness schedule by element.
  3. Surface Prep & Priming: Verify compatible primers; prep to manufacturer requirements.
  4. Application: Airless spray/brush/roller to specified wet film thickness (WFT) with environmental controls.
  5. Curing & Protection: Monitor RH/temperature, protect during cure, apply intermediate/topcoats as required.
  6. Handover: Final DFT verification, snag rectification, documentation and certification.

Our ITP governs inspection at each stage. We record WFT during application and DFT after cure using calibrated gauges. Visual standards, adhesion/holiday checks and environmental logs are maintained.

We achieve smooth architectural finishes with compatible primers and approved topcoats (matt to semi-gloss). Exterior or high-humidity environments may require durable topcoats and maintenance cycles. We verify primer compatibility, colour, and sheen before application and include redecoration guidance in the handover pack.

How do you verify thickness?

We record Wet Film Thickness during application and confirm Dry Film Thickness after full cure with calibrated gauges per our ITP.

Yes—our mobile teams work with environmental controls and access planning. Off-site application is available for programme certainty.
